Cisco and Ericsson Collaborate With Intel For 5G Technology
Cisco and Ericsson decides to team up with Intel and Verizon to develop and test a 5G router.
According to Fortune, Cisco Systems, Inc., Ericsson, and Intel are working together to build a next generation wireless gear for all the smartphone lovers. The blockbuster partnership, which Cisco and Ericsson signed in November, is finally showing initial progress in what they have been working on for months now. Both parties said at the Mobile World Congress event held in Barcelona on Monday that they plan to collaborate with the semiconductor chipmaker ‘Intel’ and a telecommunication firm ‘Verizon’ to build a 5G router in the near future.
Cisco Systems and Ericsson did not provide much detail regarding the new 5G router at the event, as they did not disclose when the device would be released. According to Fortune citing an announcement, all parties in this collaboration will play an equal and important role to make this happen.
Reportedly, Cisco will offer its networking hardware and security expertise whereas Ericsson will contribute to its wireless networking technology. Intel will play its part by offering its silicon chips that will be used in powering the 5G router device.
All three companies are members of an initiative which was started and led by Verizon to develop and test different wireless 5G technologies. Apart from these four companies, Apple, Nokia, and Qualcomm are also playing their part in this project.
The 5G technology project is not only limited to these firms. Other mobile hardware makers and wireless networks are occupied in investing and developing the 5G technology. They believe that a hardware upgrade would be necessary and people would want to move to a faster efficient technology by the end of 2020.
Fortune also reported in June last year that Ericsson has manufactured, developed, and tested a prototype on 5G technology in Stockholm, Sweden and Plano, Texas.
Cisco and Ericsson agreed on a strategic partnership, which does not only mean to work together on different technologies but boost and bolster each other’s businesses as well. According to the recent earnings posted by both parties, it can be seen that sales of core hardware products is constantly declining. This consequently means that Cisco and Ericsson need a new product to make up for this loss.
It will be a tough challenge to develop 5G device in the coming times but companies have not given up yet. The development is still in process and various organizations are striving to produce better network solutions in this endeavor.
