Netflix Puts Forward Aggressive VPN Ban With No Intention To Revert

Netflix CEO is not satisfied with users who use the platform via VPNs.

Right after Netflix Inc. revealed its plans regarding expanding globally this year, the company started to put a ban on VPN users. Many Netflix users are currently taking advantage of VPN service to overcome the geographical restrictions when it comes to content; thus, allowing a user in India to have access over the US counterpart.

The reason for geo dodging is the better choice of content in US in contrast to the local offering. However, the company is not happy with all those users who use VPN to access other region platform.

A roundtable conference took place at the company’s head office situated in Los Gatos. During this meeting, CEO Reed Hastings claimed that the company is responsible to adhere to the content right it possesses. “Someone else has paid for the rights in Germany, so we should respect that, just as we would expect the same in return,” he explained.

Particularly, what he actually means is that Netflix needs to respect the fact that it does not have the streaming rights for all content that is surfacing on its platform across the globe. All subscribers need to deal with it since they cannot really expect the company to allow them to continue the process of streaming content in a region where they do not have the official license to do so.

This rather sensitive issue needs immense importance. If the company will not become rigid, then there are high chances that it will lose its license to stream content at all. VPN users need to be condemned and strong action needs to be taken against them as perceived by the executives of the company.

The argument put forward by Netflix makes a lot of sense but VPN users also have their stance, according to them, not all users who access via VPN are doing it to overcome the geographical restrictions. Most of the users also use VPN to protect their privacy online and some want to alter their ISP. Sadly, when VPN ban is implemented, it will be applied to all users irrespective of their interest.

Netflix has made a bold move to surface its operations globally. As a worldwide network, it has to be more particular now so that it can protect itself from damage. Reed Hastings is deploying a sane strategy to ban VPNs since it can affect credibility in the long run. As of now, users need to beware since the company can also ban them for disrupting privacy if required.
